I like the second one, but would leave out the 16 identical applique blocks and quilt a similar motif in that space instead.

I love mixing pieced and applique blocks in quilts, as it adds a lot of interest to any design to mix in something a bit different.

A great way to explore a few of the possibilities of designing is to select a few blocks, add a small collection of fabrics, and start rearranging blocks to see what happens when the blocks are mixed up and rearranged.
I think it is about time for me to select a new set of assorted blocks, this time from the blocks I have designed, and see what happens when I mix them up and rearrange them like I have done with these blocks.
But first I need to play in the dirt for a while, repotting some cuttings.

Simple setting for 9 applique blocks, leaving room for quilting.
More applique, but still a nice setting for them.
I like the idea of using simple pieced blocks between applique blocks … much more interesting than using sashing. The simplest combination would be simply alternating a variety of appliques with just one pieced block design.
